Cedar Lake Homes

Cedar Lake is a town located 45 miles east of Chicago in Lake County, Indiana, with an estimated population of 12,183. This opulent community is home to the largest natural lake in Northwest Indiana, which formed from glacial meltwater and also gives the town its name. It is a large but quiet community surrounded by parks, nature trails, restaurants, and beaches to enjoy during the summer months. As a developing suburb, Cedar Lake is the ideal location for a new house with plenty of space to grow. Read up on everything Cedar Lake has to offer and start imagining yourself in this thriving, close-knit lakeside community.

Cedar Lake History

The Cedar Lake area was originally home to the Potawatomi tribe and was called Lake of the Red Cedars. Bountiful hunting and fishing opportunities made the area a central part of the Potawatomi footpath from Indiana to Illinois.

Officially settled by colonists in the mid-19th century, Cedar Lake started developing after the Monon Railroad connected to the shore. Tourists from Chicago began visiting Cedar Lake as a pristine resort vacation spot away from the tension of the city, eventually leading to over 50 hotels and cottages opening along the shore in addition to lakeside attractions, such as steamboat tours. As the resort scene in Cedar Lake dwindled in the 1940s, the city demolished hotel buildings to make room for year-round dwellings. Only one of these vacation retreats is still standing today: a former getaway called the Lassen Hotel that now houses the Lake of the Red Cedars Museum.

Today, Cedar Lake is a developing suburb with gorgeous, well-planned subdivisions perfect for taking advantage of Northern Indiana’s quiet charm. The 784-acre lake encircled by the town is still a favorite location for residents and tourists alike.

Rent a speedboat, wave runner, pontoon, or kayak for a relaxing afternoon riding the waves tubing, water skiing, or just laying out in the sun. The nearby parks offer even more outdoor enrichment, with playgrounds and walking trails scattered throughout the town. For a rugged outdoor experience, set up your tent at a lakeside campground and enjoy watching the sun set over the water as you enjoy the local flora and fauna.

If you’d rather stay on land, go for a round of golf at Cedar Creek Family Golf Center or the more private South Shore Country Club. The Family Golf Center has over 15,000 square feet of lighted green and features a challenging nine-hole executive course, a family-friendly 18-hole minigolf course, and a special footgolf course.

Explore Cedar Lake’s rich history at the Lake of the Red Cedars Museum, which houses detailed exhibits showing accurate depictions of different eras of Cedar Lake history. Also known as the Cedar Lake Historical Association Museum, this educational landmark is on the National Register of Historic Places and offers hands-on interactive tours where you can learn about the history and ecology of the area.
